En juillet 1981, dans le quartier noir et pauvre de Toxteth, la police de Liverpool arrête Leroy Cooper en pleine rue, devant une immense foule. Cette arrestation, menée avec la brutalité, alors coutumière, des forces de l’ordre britannique, ouvre les vannes de la rage accumulée après des années de harcèlement policier subi par les habitants du quartier. Des jours durant, des affrontements violents ont lieu entre la police et des jeunes de toute la région. Le phénomène se propage même à d’autres villes du pays. La nuit où cette photo a été prise, des centaines de flics ont été chassé par les émeutiers à coups de pierres et de cocktails molotov le long de Granby Street, jusqu’au centre-ville. La police est finalement parvenue à calmer le jeu, mais pas avant d’avoir réussi à énerver un paquet de gens en tirant des gaz lacrymogènes directement sur la foule.

La société britannique était sur le point d’exploser sous le choc de la fin du plein emploi et de la perte de son empire. La classe moyenne, qui avait connu une relative prospérité dans les années 1970, vivait ses derniers jours. C’était aussi une époque où on pouvait prendre des photos dans les quartiers les plus durs sans trop de problème—les gens voulaient qu’on parle de leurs luttes, ils étaient beaucoup moins méfiants. De nos jours, à moins d’être du quartier, tu as besoin d’un contact sur place pour pouvoir pénétrer dans les coins chauds. C’est devenu aussi très compliqué de choisir un angle pour présenter des combats dans lesquels aucun des deux adversaires ne pourra prétendre à la victoire sans tomber dans le nihilisme adolescent ou la frustration. Faire son boulot est encore possible, mais ça demande beaucoup de motivation, de temps et d’argent, ce qui n’est pas toujours simple dans une ère où les journaux privilégient les sujets tournant autour de la «vie de tous les jours».
Ce face-à-face à la mine d’Orgreave, près de Sheffield, a été l’un des tournants de la grève des mineurs de 1984-1985. La police a empêché les manifestants de fermer l’usine et ce fut le début d’une longue et douloureuse débacle, jusqu’à la défaite finale.
Il y a eu d’autres batailles sanglantes après celle-ci, mais le fait que les mineurs n’aient pu obtenir le soutien d’autres ouvriers lors de la bataille d’Orgreave les a dégoûté et isolé. Bien que les grévistes aient recueilli des dons d’argent importants, la tactique du gouvernement Thatcher—anticiper en stockant du charbon et envoyer des troupes de briseurs de grève remplacer les manifestants—s’est révélée efficace et a marqué la fin de l’époque des puissants syndicats.
